Planting the Color Wheel Part 1: The Rainbow Garden (Kid-friendly)!

When you stumble upon a beautiful garden, what’s usually the thing that draws our eye to the beauty? Often, it’s the color of the garden! The beauty to see color is indeed a gift from God, and makes life so much brighter! There are so many ways to incorporate color in gardens, mix it up, and create deep meanings with how we color our garden. I’m here to share lots of ways you can utilize color in your garden, make the most of your gardening space with the ultimate color combinations, and hopefully spark lots of inspiration!
Welcome to our journey around the color wheel- plant style! Every blog will highlight a different combination and its elements. There is so much color potential that God’s creation provides us with, and now you can take advantage of it!
The rainbow garden is eye-catching to anyone that walks by. Parents, have your kiddos assist you with this type of garden! It’s so fun to scout out different plants for the individual colors of the rainbow and educational, too! `
Key Elements of a Rainbow Garden
- Flowers, plants or vegetables for each color of the rainbow (the flowers can be a mix of both annuals and perennials)!
- A flat garden bed or cute container
How to Plant Your Own!
- Select your location, preferably with sun exposure and length. If you have or are able to plant an arched flower bed, that would make it look even more like a rainbow!
- Choose the type of plants you want for each color of the rainbow! You can also choose to make an edible rainbow garden! See the list below for ideas for each color of annual, perennial, and fruit/veggie! Combining a mixture of both annuals and perennials will give your garden a continuous color display. It’ll also bring both a changing, seasonal element (annuals) and an element of long-term interest (perennials).
- Start planting! It’s a good idea to plant taller plants in the back, and make sure you give adequate space for when the plants spread.
- Maintain your garden and above all, enjoy it!
